The currency of Barbados is the Barbadian Dollar, with one Dollar equalling 100 cents. Notes come in denominations of Bd$100, 50, 20, 10, 5, and 2. Coins are in denominations of Bd$1, as well as 25, 10, 5 and 1 cents. The value of the Barbadian Dollar is tied to that of the US Dollar. Money can be exchanged easily at a number of banks on the island. Traveller’s cheques are accepted widely at banks and hotels, though to avoid additional conversion charges they should be in Pounds Sterling or US Dollars. ATMs are available, and major international credit and debit cards are accepted. The export of domestic currency is prohibited. Import and export of foreign currency is unlimited, subject to declaration. Business: General banking hours in most areas are from 0800 to 1500 Mondays to Thursdays, and from 0800 to 1700 on Fridays. Shopping hours are generally from 0900 to 1700, Mondays to Fridays, and from 0830 to 1600 on Saturdays. General politeness and formality should be observed in business meetings, and a general air of ‘Britishness’ pervades Bajan life, alongside a laid-back, West Indies feel. Hotels and restaurants are usually tipped around ten to fifteen percent, though some bills do include service charges. Other tips are generally discretionary.
